The Educated Choice
Before starting his career in Real Estate with Dexter Associates Realty David was involved in Vancouver theatre as a director, playwright, producer, board member, administrator, and teacher for more than twenty-six years – while simultaneously involving himself in numerous renovations, contracting projects, and property developments.
David was born and raised in Vancouver in the Oakridge neighborhood: attending Talmud Torah Elementary School; Dr. Annie B. Jamieson Elementary School; Eric Hamber Secondary School; Langara College; the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University.
He was the founder and Artistic Director of both the Impulse Theatre Company (for youth) and the Point Blank Players Theatre Company. During his tenure with these organizations, David helped to build a theatre arts centre in the heart of Marpole (The New Space Theatre), while also producing a number of high caliber theatrical productions, including publishing a number of his plays through the Playwrights Guild of Canada. David has also volunteered on the Boards of a number of local Vancouver arts organizations.
David completed his Ph.D. from Simon Fraser University in Arts Education (with a specific research focus on improvisation, drama education, and enhancing student core learning through arts methodology) while continuing his career as a full time teacher in the Langley School District where he taught students from kindergarten through grade twelve.
David was the Canadian ‘State’ Representative for the American Alliance for Theatre and Education (AATE), the editor of one of AATE’s journals: Stage of the Arts, as well as the Organizing Chair of AATE’s 2007 Conference which took place in Vancouver, B.C., Canada
Dr. Young has been invited to present numerous academic papers, key note addresses and workshops throughout North America, and was the SIG Chair for AERA (American Education Research Association) SIG #53 Arts and Inquiry in the Visual and Performing Arts in Education. Since 1998, David has published more than three-dozen refereed academic articles in journals and periodicals from New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, Israel, the United States and Canada. David has been a community youth soccer coach in the Kerrisdale/Point Grey area for more than two decades and continues to coach his daughter’s soccer team with Vancouver United F.C.
David is an avid hockey player and Vancouver Canucks fan – playing on multiple men’s hockey league teams - as well as enjoying the precarious yearly rise and fall of his hometown Canucks. David is also a member of the Jericho Tennis Club and plays tennis weekly.
David resides in the Kerrisdale/Marpole area of Vancouver with his wife, daughter, Sheltie and Guinea Pig.
